The Art Works Galleries is based at the top of the vibrant Ouseburn Valley and is the largest single floor gallery in the North East. It offers 14,000ft of long views and open space, making it a great location not only to exhibit art work but to also hire for events.
The gallery is made up of five exhibition spaces and as we do not charge any commission from our artists it means that the work is not only affordable to buy but also exhibit.
The gallery is noted for its fantastic amount of space around the art and its raw and unpretentious approach, the concept of which was devised by North East artist Matt Forster and Nicolette Perry. Their unique approach to gallery management means an interactive exhibition space designed to look after the best interests of the artists.
This is an evolutionary venue — a one of its kind — where constructive dialogue between artists and the public can take place and interests in enjoying and buying art can develop. A unique working blend of in-house curating coupled with artist autonomy will ensure all of the exhibitions are inspired, relevant and constantly changing.

Attention All Budding Artists
The Art Works Galleries is inviting talented artists to seize the opportunity to display their work in a professional city centre gallery in their third prestigious Focused Eye exhibition.
The Focused Eye competition is the brainchild of resident artist and gallery owner Matt Forster and invites entrants to submit a piece of themed artwork to be showcased in the gallery in Ouseburn, Newcastle for three months.
Following the success of previous competitions, the latest exhibition theme to challenge artists is Focus on the Figure which is an exploration of the human figure in all its variations.
Nicolette Perry, Co-Director at the gallery, said: “The competition is a fantastic chance for new talent to surface and it’s exciting to see fresh ideas and concepts and is designed to inspire and arouse deep thinking. And who knows, the gallery could possibly be showcasing the work of the next Michelangelo or Da Vinci.”
Previous winner, photographer John Watson, 32, from Cramlington, beat 30 gifted and established artists who were accepted to the final stage of the first Focused Eye’s True Blue competition, and displayed a collection of his work in the gallery for a month as his prize.
John entered his 4ft canvas - Hazy Beach, but never imagined he would win. He said: “I entered simply as it was a great opportunity to see what the public thought as it can be hard to judge your own work fairly.”
Currently displayed is the Winter Wonderland Focused Eye exhibition which is the artists’ interpretation of winter and is proving very popular with the public. Included is photography, textiles, watercolour and oil paintings and also the insightful installation artwork of a cosy living area on a cold winter’s night.
Winter Wonderland will feature in the gallery until the end of March for visitors to vote on their favourite item and have the chance to purchase one of these limited edition pieces.
Entries to Focus on the Figure should be submitted by the 8th March and will be exhibited from April 2007. Applications are available from the gallery, for yours please contact info@theartworksgalleries.com or call 0191 261 9922.
