Ouseburn Trust

Hello,

Are you interested in helping with the work of the Ouseburn Trust and its archive?

The Ouseburn Trust is looking for east end residents with an interest in local history to join their growing archive team.

These are the main roles available:

Archivist – learn how to create an inventory, scan photos and documents and use real industry archive software. We work with old photos and slides of the Ouseburn and Byker, plus we are currently cataloguing the entire collection of images by acclaimed local photographer Davey Pearson.

Researcher – learn how to research a historical subject using our archive and other resources, and find out more about the things that interest you with our help. You could even see your work published in our newsletter, ‘Ouseburn Past and Present’

Oral history interviewer – learn about interview techniques, how to use a professional digital recorder and how to transcribe your interviews using specialist software. We send teams of two out to interview older residents of the area and take their photos, sometimes also scanning their snapshots for the archive. You may even know of someone with great stories to tell – why not be the one to record them?

Photographer – our lively photography group is interested in recording how we live today, and in documenting the changes happening around us. They have a number of projects on the go, including placements into businesses and factories, photo-walks and planning exhibitions. If you want to improve your work, share your knowledge and explore your ideas for photography projects in the Ouseburn and east end, this is the group for you. Don’t have a camera but want to learn? We have a digital SLR for your use, and will be putting on training courses.

PLUS – special opportunities outside the archive:

Publication distributor – the Trust produces a number of leaflets and newsletters for the community. We are looking for a volunteer with a car who would like to spend one day a month distributing these publications to venues in the local area. We will pay mileage!

Information pack author – we would like to hear from anyone who would like to create an information pack for academic visitors to the area. This project will involve researching, reading, summarizing and collecting together a wide range of factual data on the Ouseburn, and presenting it as a pack for student visitors. An ideal project for anyone who would like to get an in-depth knowledge of the area, or who would like a chance to learn or apply desk-top publishing skills – we will train in the use of Quark graphic design software.

Hello from the Ouseburn Trust, the development trust for the Ouseburn Valley.

I'm not going to put on much information, because we maintain the official Valley site at http://www.ouseburntrust.org.uk/ and also will be expanding our own site in the New Year.

The Trust site at http://www.ouseburntrust.org.uk/ is currently just a holding site, but in 2006 it will be transformed into an online archive for the material of the Ouseburn Trust Heritage Group as part of our Living Archive Project.

Anyone who is interested in heritage, regeneration, changes, and/or digital photography - please look out for opportunities to contribute to our archive through our recently-funded and soon-to-be installed community access PCs. Computers, scanners, sound recording equipment and cameras will be made available to all those wishing to document the Valley and their life within it, past and present.

Your aspirations and visions for the future are also of great interest to the Trust, as we try to piece together a truly grass-roots vision of the valley's development over the next 20 years.
