Walks

On a sunny summers day the hustle and bustle of life in the city is reduced to the sound of the cars and lorries passing overhead on byker bridge.

the birds are singing and could that have been a Red Admiral butterfly that just flew past?

Support the Rock

The Journal is asking its readers and the wider North-East community, to demonstrate their faith and confidence in Northern Rock by opening an account. I would also like to support NR, not just because they always offer the best mortgage rates, but to underline the great work done by NRs associated charity -the Northern Rock Foundation (which recieves 5% of NR pre-tax profits).

just look at the bottom of any North East Social Enterprise letterhead and recognise the importance of NRF within our community.

Journal- Support the rock Link

 http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/7000612.stm

Personally, I believe NR will come through this and return to pole position in the mortgage market. As a Company Treasurer myself, I know the prudence of arranging a pre-emptive overdraft to avoid a possible cash flow crisis. Global finance markets provoked NRs request to the Bank of England and even though the Bank of England responded positively, consumer confidence fell away rapidly, thankfully that confidence is gradually returning.

I feel the lesson for us all is that the confidence to borrow within a stable economy leaves us as a nation, vulnerable to the inevitable fluctuations in global markets. It is apparent that consumers act as a group, regardless of the facts, knowing that withdrawing their money made NR weaker, a knee-jerk self-fulfilling prophesy, the consumers were protected yet the shareholders suffered. - Alex

The report of the government inspector looking into the proposed barrage across the Ouseburn under Glasshouse Bridge has recently been published. If you’d like to read it here’s an interesting link.

http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/twa/ir/ouseburnbarrageinspectorrptpdf?version=1

-Eric

The following section has been taken from the government inspector's report into the objection relating to the Ouseburn Barrage. -Alex

Overall Conclusions

In my opinion, the wide-ranging regeneration and socio-economic benefits that would arise as a result of providing the proposed barrage in the Ouseburn would clearly outweigh the limited environmental impacts that would remain after mitigation. I accordingly conclude that the case for making the Order, as amended, and conferring on NCC the CPO powers contained therein is compelling and in the public interest.

I likewise conclude that it would be in the public interest to grant the associated application for deemed planning consent.

I also conclude that the S19 Certificate should be granted. In coming to these conclusions I have taken into account the ES and other environmental information, including comments and representations made by statutory consultees and members of the public.

Our local publisher, Martin Ellis, recently produced a book about one man’s experiences in the Spanish Civil War.

To Make The People Smile Again is based on the experience of George Wheeler. An ordinary man, George volunteered to go to Spain to help the Spanish people in their fight against fascism and to defend the democratically elected government. It is an accessible, quick read that can be enjoyed by everyone who likes a good story and is essential reading for anyone with even the slightest interest in the Spanish Civil War. A dramatisation is about to be broadcast on the BBC World Service.

The BBC World Service dramatisation has come about following conversations whilst enjoying beer in the Cumberland Arms between Martin Ellis of Zymurgy Publishing and Steve Chambers. Steve is a well respected dramatist who has had many plays broadcast and performed on stage.

The book has sold well throughout Britain and has been translated into Spanish by one of the biggest Spanish publishing houses and is available throughout the Spanish speaking world. The BBC World service has 42 million listeners.

It will go out in the BBC World Drama slot on Saturday 6 January at 2001hrs GMT on 648 MW or Freeview 710 / DAB digital / Sky digital 0115 or online at www.bbcworldservice.com and select “BBC World Drama” from the drop down programmes list.

I am interested to hear what people think about the offical Ouseburn valley site - is it easy to navigate, can you find the information you want quickly enough, or at all? Is it attractive and accessible? What is missing?

Any responses to info@ouseburntrust.org, thanks very much! - Kirsten

The Official Ouseburn Valley site can be found at

http://www.ouseburnvalley.org/page/index.cfm

Personally, I think it is a good web site which represents many of the organisations in the Valley, the navigation is fine with plenty of information and contact details. The magnifier view on the interactive Map is a bit freaky especially as my eyes are burnt out staring at this screen for hours. The map could have links to the web sites of each organisation.

I am looking forward to seeing the new ouseburn trust's web site, though -Alex
