You’ve probably seen the four waymarkers at the entrances to the valley. These were designed in 2002 by Lewis Robinson and each one celebrates one aspect of the industrial past of the area.

The four are:

Broken Bottle Column at the City Stadium

Roman Column Bar on Byker Bank

Rope House Tower on Cut Bank

Glass House Tower by the Tyne pub on Maling Street

The City is now planning to erect another one by Warwick Street on the City Stadium and is inviting comments.

This latest piece of public art is described thus “The artwork will act as a waymarker for the Ouseburn Valley and is part of a programme of activities to raise the profile of the Valley and encourage more visitors to the area."

The sculpture reflects the river within its urban environment and will be 4 metres tall. It will be lit with a changing colour sequence making it visible at night.

Information about the river and the Valley will be etched into the sculpture. The sculpture will be treated with a special finish so that graffiti can be easily removed”

Comments are invited (not to me please) about this proposed artwork.

I have deleted the contacts until permission for posting is recieved -Alex

You can pick up a leaflet with an artist’s impression of what the work will look like from Shieldfield Housing Office, Ouseburn House Community Centre, the East End Library and the Civic Centre. It’ll also be discussed at the next Ouseburn Arts and Culture Forum at the Mushroom Works on Wednesday 22nd Feb between 12noon and 2pm. There will be formal public consultation when planning permission is sought.

The proposal is part of a wider Newcastle City Council project aimed at improving legibility and signposting around the Ouseburn Valley which is funded by single programme.
