A Vikings Guide to Deadly Dragons with Cressida Cowell

Opening Saturday 27 October 2012

 

Based on Cressida Cowell's popular How To Train Your Dragon series, this exhibition will transport you back in time to the Dark Ages, a world where Vikings ruled and dragons roamed. Our hero, Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third is our guide, introducing us to his tribe, the Hairy Hooligans, his island home of Berk, his hunting dragon Toothless and his quest to become a hero the hard way. Join us to explore the wild dragons cliffs, sail on a Viking boat, and share epic yarns in the Great Hall. You can also see how Cressida’s series has been made into the popular How To Train Your Dragon DreamWorks film animation.

An Evening with Allan Ahlberg

Allan Ahlberg is a former teacher, postman, plumber’s mate and grave digger, and one of Britain’s best loved authors. He has written over 140 children’s books in collaboration with his late wife Janet, Bruce Ingman and his daughter Jessica, amongst others. These range from poetry to picture books, including The Jolly Postman, Each Peach Pear Plum and The Pencil and many more children’s classics. He has won numerous awards, including the Kurt Maschler Award, the Children’s Book Award and the Blue Peter Book Award.

 

Join Allan as he talks about his work, beginning with his new book The Goldilocks Variations, his first collaboration with Jessica, retelling the traditional Goldilocks story in a multitude of inventive new ways; from Goldilocks and the 33 Bears to Goldilocks and the Alien Bliim, this fabulous new work is a wonderful addition Allan’s exciting career.

Take flight to Seven Stories this October and be the first to witness A Viking’s Guide to Deadly Dragons with Cressida Cowell. This brand new exhibition takes us into the world of the Vikings, long ago when dragons lived among us.

 

Learn what it means to be a Viking hero with dragon themed craft activities including designing your own dragon, making your own Viking helmet and adding to our Dragonese Dictionary. Celebrate Viking storytelling with themed stories all week.

 

On Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 October, our resident dragon-catcher will breathe life into our willow dragon. With your help we’ll build a dragon that weaves and twists its way through our attic beams.

 

PLUS meet Derek the Talking Dragon all day on Saturday 3 November.

Find out the history of Seven Stories, view rare and unseen treasures from our Collection and take part in a unique ‘white glove’ experience with some of the highlights from Seven Stories’ archive. Meet the expert team who bring the Collection to life, ask questions and find out how we ensure that our illustrations and manuscripts are safe guarded for future generations.

 

These tours are a great opportunity to meet and chat to other people interested in the UK’s vibrant literary heritage over a delicious classic cream tea in the Seven Stories Café directly after the tour. Or book onto one of our festive tours in November and December and receive a mouth-watering mince pie and hot chocolate.

Brian will celebrate the 1812 publication of the Grimms' Kinder-und Hausmärchen, probably the single most important event in the history of folklore and storytelling. He will show us the rather curious beginnings of the project and the contested question of authenticity, before going on to consider the sometimes damaging results of the stories' translation and illustration.

Meet award-winning illustrator Catherine Rayner as she talks about her wonderfully vibrant new picture book Soloman Crocodile which was shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal in 2012. Join Catherine for an event full of snappy stories and drawing that the whole family will enjoy.

 

Catherine burst onto the scene in 2006 when she was awarded the Best New Illustrator Award at the Booktrust Early Years Award for Augustus and his Smile, which was also selected as one of the five picture books to be featured and recommended on Channel 4’s Richard and Judy Christmas Party’. Add your favourite creature to the trees and make your own animal masks to scare off predators. But be warned, you never know what creatures lurk around the corner…
