Seven Stories On the Road!

While our Visitor Centre is closed (20 April – 19 July 2015) we will still be bringing the magic of children's books to life across the North East. Join us for stories, songs games and more!

Seven Stories, National Centre for Children's Books will close while we undergo major refurbishment work and will reopen on Sunday 19th July 2015 - just in time for the Summer Holidays!

Seven Stories has been open every day and after 10 years in in need of investment. The refurbishment will make your visitor experience even more magical for children of all ages, improve functionality and make the building more energy efficient.

Seven Stories will open with 3 brand new exhibitions, Painting with Rainbows –A Michael Foreman Exhibition, Rhyme Around the World and A Bear Called Paddington.

The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party (part of The Late Shows 2015)

Oh my ears and whiskers, how late it’s getting! Seven Stories and The Mushroom works have joined forces to transform the Mushroom Works into scenes from Alice in Wonderland.

 

Step into a world filled with characters from this famous children’s story. You’ll be able to have tea with the Mad Hatter or try to keep your head with the Queen of Hearts or even create a winning smile just like the Cheshire cat’s.

 

Those madcap artists and designers will be around too for you to meet and discover what they do. There’ll be work to buy or commission over the two nights from affordable gifts to innovative pieces of furniture.

 

If that’s weren’t enough, they’ve also got beer by Mordue Brewery on tap and Alice-themed cupcakes to nibble on by local bakery, Olivia Rose. Keep your eyes and ears peeled for ways to enter their free prize draw with the chance of winning a ‘teatastic’ Rington’s hamper.

Wild Rumpus!

Let the wild rumpus start! You are invited to join Max for a Wild Rumpus at Gibside this June.

 

Make your own Wild Thing mask and create a musical instrument before following Max through the woods in a fun and noisy event celebrating classic picture-book Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak. Join us as we bring this favourite story to life in Gibside’s historic landscape gardens with stories, songs, crafts and more.

 

Please Note: This event will take place approx. 1 mile (30 minute walk) from the main gates. Please leave enough time on arrival to make your way to event area.

We will be bringing your favourite children's books to life at Kirkley Hall to celebrate The Children's Foundations 25th anniversary. Take part in livey storytelling sessions, join in with our Mixed - Up Fairy Tale Performance and make your own animal mask to take home surrounded by beautiful woodland. Who knows who you might bump into!

The doorbell rings just as Sophie and her mummy are sitting down to tea. Who could it possibly be? What they certainly don’t expect to see at the door is a big, stripy tiger!

 

Join in an interactive storytelling session and create your own tiger masks to take home as we celebrate one of our favourite picture books, The Tiger Who Came to Tea which will be brought to life at Theatre Royal.

Free additional event. Tickets must be purchased from Theatre Royal for performances of The Tiger Who Came To Tea www.theatreroyal.co.uk .  A Relaxed screening can be booked at 4pm on Friday 3 July. Those attending showings of the production must make sure to be in their seats with enough time before the performance starts.

 

The Starlight Goodwill Ambassadors Storytelling Roadshow

Sunday 9th August

All the family (recommended for ages 5+)

 

Join in an interactive performance as 26 Taiwanese children bring Taiwanese and Chinese culture, history and local folktales to life through storytelling, body language and simple hand puppets. The children will even be giving away souvenirs straight from their stories and bringing along authentic edibles for the audience to sample.

 

The Starlight Goodwill Ambassadors are part of a cultural exchange from Taiwan and will also be performing at Edinburgh Festival.

 

Free event, booking recommended. Admission fee to the centre applies. Entry to Seven Stories is free after 2pm with an event ticket.

Yo Ho Ho! Meet Jonny Duddle, author of The Pirate Cruncher, The Pirates Next Door and The Jolley-Rogers series and hear him read from his hilarious stories. Join in with live drawing and help Jonny to draw the perfect pirate in this interactive event. Did you know, Jonny helped design the characters for Aardman’s stop-motion movie The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists! which was released in 2012.

Jonny Duddle is the illustrator of The Pirate Cruncher, The Pirates Next Door and dinosaur fable, Giganotosaurus. He spends most of his time drawing and busily creating worlds based on his time as a pirate…arrrh! 

 

Don’t miss this exclusive opportunity to work alongside Jonny Duddle and find out more about how he began his varied illustration career and the steps of his creative process before developing your own skills. Come along and learn how to use different artistic techniques, inspired by Jonny’s vibrant style, to create your own artwork.

Trolls with Adam Stower

Oliver doesn't believe all the scary rumours, but Troll's not so sure ...

Meet  Sarah Crossan (author of Carnegie shortlisted Weight of Water and Apple and Rain) and Jenny McLachlan(author of Flirty Dancing and Love Bomb) in conversation with their agent Julia Churchill.

 

Hear how teaching has influenced their writing styles, their career routes into becoming YA authors and why having the right agent is so important.  Fans of Sarah and Jenny can ask questions about their work and favourite characters while aspiring authors can find out more about a career in writing for young adults.
